Reading and Literacy

At Darul Hadis Latifiah, we place a strong emphasis on reading and literacy, understanding the vital role they play in shaping our students' academic success, personal growth, and future opportunities. We believe that fostering a love for reading from an early age not only enhances language skills but also opens doors to critical thinking, creativity, and self-expression.

Promoting a Reading Culture

One of the ways we encourage this at our school is by making it mandatory for all students to carry a reading book with them throughout the school day. This policy ensures that students always have access to reading material, and they are given time to read daily, particularly in the morning before tutorial sessions when they gather in the hall for a quiet reading period. This regular practice cultivates both a habit of reading and an appreciation for literature in students’ everyday routines.

Dedicated Reading and Literacy Lessons

In Years 7 and 8, we provide dedicated reading and literacy lessons, where students engage in guided reading, vocabulary-building exercises, and comprehension activities. These lessons aim to enhance students' reading fluency, understanding, and critical thinking, while exposing them to a variety of genres and writing styles. Through these sessions, students explore both fiction and non-fiction texts, allowing them to develop skills necessary for success in subjects across the curriculum.

Visits to Local Libraries

To further nurture students' interest in reading, we organise regular visits to local libraries, where they can explore a wide range of books and other resources. These trips not only support students in finding reading material that matches their interests, but also teach them essential research and library skills. We encourage students to take advantage of these library visits by borrowing books, which helps foster independence and responsibility for their own learning.

World Book Day Celebrations

At Darul Hadis Latifiah, we celebrate World Book Day annually, a highlight of our literacy programme. Students and staff are encouraged to immerse themselves in literature through a variety of activities. This celebration of books and reading is a wonderful opportunity for students to see reading as fun and engaging, while also broadening their exposure to different kinds of literature.

Competitions and Prizes

We believe that recognising students’ efforts in reading and writing helps to motivate and inspire them. Therefore, we hold half-termly writing and speaking competitions, where students are encouraged to showcase their creativity and writing abilities. These competitions cover a wide range of themes and allow students to develop their communication skills, both in writing and public speaking. Prizes are awarded to the best readers and writers, providing an additional incentive for students to push themselves and aim for excellence.

Fostering Literacy Beyond Reading

Our literacy programme extends beyond reading and into the realms of writing and speaking, recognising the importance of well-rounded communication skills. Students are taught to articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently, both in writing and verbally. The half-termly competitions also include public speaking events, where students can practice presenting their ideas to an audience, an essential skill for future academic and professional success.

Ultimately, our goal is to instil a love for reading and a strong foundation in literacy that stays with our students for life. We believe that students who develop these skills early on are better equipped to succeed academically, think critically, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. By integrating reading into the daily lives of our students and offering varied literacy-focused activities, we are committed to developing confident, articulate learners who are prepared to excel both in school and beyond.
